A group of U.S. Senators Announce Immigration Reform Proposal
WASHINGTON, KOMPAS.com - A group of prominent U.S. Senators from both parties on Monday (28/1) announced a plan for immigration reform, which includes a step toward citizenship for those currently living in the U.S. illegally.
One senator, Charles Schumer, said the proposal was a tough but fair plan for citizenship.
Marco Rubio, Republican Senator from Florida said members of Congress have a duty to address the state of 11 million people who are in America illegally while justice for those who apply for citizenship through legitimate channels.
The members of Congress recognize American immigration system "brantakan." The proposal was announced ahead of President Barack Obama's speech delivered on Tuesday to push for immigration reform.
Illegal immigrants will register with the government, pass background checks, pay fines and arrears of tax and complete the other steps to obtain the status of experiments that will enable them to live and work legally in the United States. They will then be placed on back order queue of people trying to obtain a "green card" as a legal permanent resident.
The proposal includes an exception for those who entered the U.S. as children, and for agricultural workers which, according to the senators that plays an important role in keeping America's food supply.
New road to citizenship was submitted along with increased enforcement, including the use of more unmanned surveillance aircraft, surveillance and immigration officers.
