Greenhouse Gas Altered to be Fuel

Changing greenhouse gases that cause global warming to be useful materials for this just be a dream. Zhiyong Yang, students from Utah State University managed to make it happen.

The results of research conducted with his colleague, Vivian Moure from the Federal University of Parana, Brazil, and Dennis Dean of Virginia Tech, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, on Monday (12/11/2012).

That said, success is still in the research stage. His discovery was the first step to realize the dream turn CO2 into useful materials.

"We can change the amount of carbon dioxide into methane and processes that we run is still very slow and inefficient," Yang was quoted as saying Physorg rich on Monday.

"But now we can understand the chemical processes. Could just place the basic principles of this conversion, which the chemists can develop better design and more efficient catalysts," added Yang.

Converting CO2 into other compounds has been difficult because the CO2 is very stable. The successful converts utilizing bacteria.

Who had previously studied bacterial nitrogenase, nitrogen reducing bacteria. Who discovered molybdenum nitrogenase capable of converting carbon monoxide into hydrocarbons. The research published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry on June 3, 2011.

"Using this knowledge, we ponder and wonder if the same process could be used to convert carbon dioxide," said Yang. That using genetic engineering techniques that can be used for bacterial nitrogenase turn CO2 into methane.

Going forward, the challenge is to describe how the conversion goes, knowledge transfer and construction of the catalyst.
