Often Begadang Impact on Gene Activity

SURREY, KOMPAS.com - work or other social activities often make a man forced to decrease the time to sleep. But you know, staying up continuously for several days was very influential genetically.

Results of research conducted by a team of researchers Surrey Sleep Research Centre at Surrey University, led by Prof. Derk-Jan Dijk, revealed that people who sleep less than 6 hours hours over several days in a row to change the arrangement of genes active in the body.
It was revealed from the results of blood tests carried out on individual samples consisting of 14 men and 12 women, aged between 23-31 years.
The blood tests showed that in people who experience sleep deprivation, 267 genes became more active, while the other gene activity 444, respectively.
Several changes occur in genes related to the health condition of the person. Among other things, changes in the activity of genes that regulate metabolism, genes that regulate the inflammatory response as well as genes that affect stress and aging.
Researchers suspect that changes in genes that regulate metabolism could potentially cause diabetes or obesity. Meanwhile, changes in genes that regulate the inflammatory response, potentially leading to heart disease.
This finding surprised the researchers involved. "To our surprise, it turned out differences in sleep duration are very few deliver major change," Dijk said as quoted by The Guardian, Monday (25/02/2013).
"This indicates that poorer sleep disorders affect more than just make you feel more tired," he added.
Meanwhile, Jim Horne, professor of psychophysiology at the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University gave a different argument.
He said the potential dangers of sleep deprivation that occurs in the present and the need to sleep for 8 hours a night often exaggerated.
"The results are a supporting evidence for the problem, but the thing to note is, the participants involved in the study as 'forced' to reduce their bedtime. Condition can cause stress on them," he said.
Horne added, "We must be careful in digesting the results of this study and not mengeneralisasinya. Someone who used to sleep for six hours and they are happy with it. Addition, the bed can adapt to some changes, and should be judged on quality, not just quantity. "
