When Government Slow, Can Beef Price Doubles

VIVAnews - Jakarta Beef Committee judge if no concrete steps from the government in tackling soaring beef prices, the price of meat can achieve twice the current price.

Secretary KDS Jakarta, Afan Anugroho, revealed shortages of beef due to the scarcity of local supplies. Beef prices in the market has reached Rp90-100 thousand per kilogram.

"If this condition persists, beef prices could double from current prices in 2014," he said when contacted VIVAnews, Tuesday, February 19, 2013.

He explains the beef import quota restrictions do not affect the price of beef in the market, because the imported meat is devoted to industrial and hotel restaurant and catering (Hospitality).

Afan criticize government policy which proclaimed beef self-sufficiency by 2014. According to him, the government has not been able to beef self-sufficiency as a national cattle inventory data is inaccurate.

In addition, the stock can not be a national beef up beef because the cow has been a savings for rural communities. The new society sells pet cow when they need money.

In addition, the Committee also found some abattoir (slaughterhouse) cutting productive cows because of lack of decent beef cattle stock. "But the law, which should cut that beef bulls or cows that are not productive," he said.
